FSU Interlibrary Loan FAQ
What is ILLiad?
ILLiad is the electronic system you use to request an item through Interlibrary Loan. The name ILLiad stands for InterLibrary Loan internet accessible database.
Which institutions are eligible to borrow from FSU?
We follow the OCLC lending standards, we loan to borrowing institutions that reciprocate by lending their collection to the FSU Libraries. Priority is given to institutions that are affiliated with the following groups: Soline, LVIS, Kudzu, and SHARES.
Why does our institution need a username and password to use ILLiad?
Your username and password allows us to give you secure access to information about your interlibrary loan requests. We can also enable you to edit your personal information such as your address or phone number.
What if our institution forgets our password?
In the event that you forget your password, please contact the Interlibrary Loan Office at (850) 644-4171. We can then reset your password allowing you access to ILLiad. Please change your password once you logon to ILLiad.
What materials does FSU NOT loan?
Interlibrary Loan (ILL) is a library to library transaction and is regulated by the Copyright Law (U.S. Code, Title 17) and the policies of the American Library Association Interlibrary Loan Code for the United States. Although there are exceptions, we do not provide access to materials such as:
- Entire issues of bound or unbound journals
- Reference books
- Special Collections Materials
- Text books
- Multimedia Materials [VHS cassettes, CDs, microforms(will loan microform government documents), etc...]
- Teaching Kits
- Standardized Test Preparation Material (GRE, LSAT, NCAT, etc...)
- Best sellers
- Comic books
- Resource Guides
- Some Electronic Resources such as Books in NetLibrary.
- Items on Reserve
- Computer Software
- College of Music Microforms
- College of Information Microforms
- Dirac Science Library Microforms
How may our institution request a Special Collections item?
For items located in Special Collections, we request you contact our Special Collections Librarian, Lucia Patrick at (850) 644-6167.
How long does the FSU lending process take?
The Interlibrary Loan office cannot predict the availability or location of an item therefore we cannot guarantee that materials will be received within a specified period of time. We encourage you to submit requests well in advance of deadlines.
On average it takes two to three working days for the FSU Libraries to fill an ILL request. It can take anywhere from three (3) days to a week to receive materials, depending on the location and the availability of the item.
The ILL department is not located in the same building as the main collections, therefore same day requests are difficult to fill.
How long does FSU keep articles after they are sent out electronically?
Articles sent via Ariel are kept for two weeks after they are sent to the borrowing institution. After two weeks we ask that a new request be submitted.
How much does FSU charge for articles?
Articles up to fifty pages are sent free of charge to affiliated libraries. Articles longer than fifty pages are $10.00 and $.10 for each additional page. Non-affiliated libraries are charged $10.00 per article, with the same charges for large articles.
When are FSU-ILL materials due?
The standard loan period is one month for ILL items, and the borrowing library will specify the due date, allowing sufficient time to return materials before the FSU due date. Typically, items may be kept for two weeks. The due date for materials will be noted on the bookstrap around the item. The lending library may place certain restrictions on the item, for example: no renewals or in-library use only.
How will a loan be shipped and how does our institution return borrowed materials?
We ship loans inside the Continental U.S., using Library rate through the U.S. mail. We ship loans outside the U.S. using Federal Express (FedEx). Materials within Florida are shipped using Delivery (Florida Library courier system). We prefer that materials be returned by the same process they were shipped.
How does our institution renew borrowed materials?
Renewals may be submitted by using the same process used to orignally request the material. Only one renewal will be allowed for a two week period.
What if our institution loses or damages borrowed materials?
The borrowing institution is financially responsible for the requested item from the time the item reaches shipping status in OCLC until the item is returned to FSU. The policy states that you are responsible for any charges levied for an item that is lost or damaged while in your possession as well as requires you to pay for any repair, replacement or processing fees that the lending library charges.
What Web browser should our institution use?
You need a Web browser that can handle forms, tables, and preferrably Cascading Style Sheets (CSS). We recommend the current versions of either Microsoft Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox.
Why does our browser say that FSU is sending a cookie?
The technology that we use sends a Session ID to be stored on your machine. You can refuse this cookie and still be able to use ILLiad without any problems.
